The Zozi chair whose full name is Zozibini in Xhosa means with both hands (receiving a gift) is inspired by the traditional Xhosa face painting, or umchokozo undertaken by Xhosa women to decorate their faces with white or yellow ochre using dots that make flowing patterns.
This artistic display of body art forms part of certain cultural rituals, some of which are meant to prepare the person receiving the art for life, leadership, and roles of custodians of their culture. The dotted laser patterns of the Zozi chair are inspired by this culturally and spiritually significant art form.
