HLUTHA WOVEN TABLE

The Hlutha Table forms part of TheUrbanative’s Homecoming Collection, a 24-piece collection created in collaboration with a local community of makers, designers and craftspeople. The collection explores the idea of home not simply as a physical place, but as a feeling of warmth, comfort and belonging.
Hlutha, meaning “fullness” in isiXhosa, finds expression in the table’s generous rounded form. Inspired by the woven rooftops of traditional African huts and structures, the table abstracts their layered construction, repetition and handwoven detailing through a contemporary material language.
A rounded powder-coated steel frame creates an open, drum-like structure, intricately woven with cord and finished with a solid timber top. The interplay of precise steel, tactile weaving and natural timber reflects the relationship between structure and craft found in the architectural references that inspired the piece.
Through its layered construction and material contrasts, the Hlutha Table translates elements of traditional making into a contemporary object centred on gathering, connection and the idea of home.
