The Phondo Mirror is the latest addition to the 2018 African Crowns Collection. Its name is drawn from the Nguni word phondo, referencing a horn or projection and colloquially used to describe a ponytail or afro puff. This meaning is expressed through the ring of sculptural spheres that crown the mirror, forming a quiet yet confident silhouette that recalls hair gathered, lifted, and adorned.
Crafted from solid Kiaat and stained a deep rosewood, the rose coloured mirror balances simplicity with subtle sculptural details with the brass plated scalloped edge. A soft cotton fringe detail anchors the piece, introducing movement and tactility while nodding to traditions of adornment and care. Both functional and symbolic, the Phondo Mirror reflects the continuing stories of African hair stories and play with materiality.
